What is the best way to hock an engagement ring? How do I get maximum return when trying to sell it?

Do not take it to a jeweler or pawn shop. If they know that you are selling it based on emotion or need for money then you are vulnerable to them and you will end up selling it cheap! You are better off selling it on your own. Place it on craigslist or ebay. Give as much info on the ring as possible i.e... size, clarity,shape, color , a pic etc. Good Luck and be patient!
