Is the purpose of religion to entice people to do—for lack of a better term—*things* of an ineffable nature?

I know this seems a little hazy, but what I'm really trying to express is that religion delivers some sort of enticement, which is usually some sort of enlightenment or eternal life. However, do we really need these enticements to do good things?
