What could be the reason the religion of atheism has committed more atrocities than any other religion?

Of course I'm talking about atheist leaders such as Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, ect, who were responsible for the deaths of over 250 million people in the past 100 years. Why has the religion of atheism produced such scary monsters?
